Hazing Facts

Hazing can have life-changing and life-ending impacts. Take a look at some statistics that Allan and Madden (2008) found:

  • 1.5 million high school students are hazed each year and 47% of college students came to college having already experienced hazing.
  • 90% of college students who experienced hazing behavior did not believe they were hazed.
  • Alcohol consumption, humiliation, isolation, sleep-deprivation, and sexual acts are hazing practices commonly used across all types of student groups.

In 2024, the StopHazing team at the University of Maine conducted a campus-wide hazing climate survey. Results from the survey showed that:

  • In total, 26.4% of the Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» College students who responded to questions about behaviors required to join or maintain membership in the organization they are most involved in experience at least one behavior that meets the definition of hazing.
  • The most common hazing behaviors Â鶹´«Ã½Ó³» students experienced were singing or chanting (9.4%), associating with specific people and not others (8.4%), attending a skit night or roast where other members were humiliated (6.1%), participating in a drinking game (5.8%), and being yelled at, screamed at, or cursed at by other members (5.1%).
  • Students who experienced hazing behaviors reported that they shared their experience with other members of the organization (55.3%), a friend not on the team or in the group (31.9%), or boyfriend, girlfriend, or partner (31.9%)
